The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is the standard by which a property’s energy efficiency is measured. How to Read the HERS Index

As you shop around for homes, you’ll want to look for the lowest HERS scores. A typical existing property will score in the 130 range – that’s a score associated with higher than average energy costs. A standard new home will fall around the 100 point mark. The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a home with a score of 70 is 30 percent more energy efficient than a standard new home, while those with a score of 130 will be 30 percent less energy efficient by comparison.
