Building technology is always changing, and one of the biggest focuses for this change is in energy efficiency. As costs fluctuate and issues like climate change become more important, buyers and builders alike want to have a positive impact on the environment and their checkbooks!
Duke Energy complies with the HERO program, a part of the NC Conservation Code that encourages energy efficient homebuilding. Absolute is proud to provide HERO-certified homes to Chapel Ridge, Chatham County and the surrounding areas.
What Makes a Home HERO-Compliant?
HERO-compliant homes are determined by their compliance with the Home Energy Rating System (or HERS – forgive the similar sounding acronym.) The lower a building’s number on the scale, the more energy-efficient it is.
Most existing homes in the US score a 130 on this scale, and a typical new home scores an 85. HERO-compliant homes score in the 60-70 range, representing an almost 20% improvement over typical new homes!
What Are the Building Methods Used?
Naturally, achieving such stellar energy efficiency requires some extra work on the part of your builder. There are four key areas that are emphasized in HERO homes:
- Insulation’s efficacy is determined by its R-value. Higher R-value insulation is used on these homes because it is much more effective, and independently evaluated by a HERS Rater.
- Tighter building shells. Air leaks are one of the biggest sources of energy loss in a home; HERO homes are at least 20% tighter than average homes. A big focus for HERO homes is on sealing around pipes and air ducts, especially in the attic. 2×6 timbers are also used for the exterior
- Better HVAC design. Smarter duct pathing, cutting-edge devices, and proper duct sealing ensure a minimum of 33% more efficient HVAC compared to typical new homes.
- High-efficiency windows. Windows for HERO homes have a special heat-resistant coating that reduce heat leakage, and keeps the sunlight from fading on furniture.
What’s the Benefit for a Buyer?
The most obvious is a significantly reduced energy bill; you can expect to save 15-20% on your energy bills every month! These can add up to many thousands of dollars over your ownership of the home. Because of the extra care involved in HERO certification, your home will typically be built with higher quality materials and craftsmanship.
